You may have noticed the banners outside the RAFA Club recently. We are happy to announce that the first Meeting Centre in the west of Scotland has opened in Prestwick.

What is a Meeting Centre (MC)? They started in 1993 in the Netherlands to provide practical, emotional and social support for people who have a recent diagnosis of dementia, and also their carer or family members. It’s a social club for members where everyone brings their own skills and talents to the group, the daily programme of events is driven by the members. Here in Prestwick, members can join us Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays, from 10:30am – 3:00pm. Each day costs £15 with lunch and unlimited refreshments included. If you know us, you’ll know we love to feed people!

The MC will be managed by experienced staff who have undergone training from the University of Worcester, the UK’s centre of excellence for this model of dementia care within communities. We have a fabulous group of enthusiastic person-centred volunteers, who are empathetic, trained, and great company.

Families/carers can come along too, and receive support and guidance with practical and emotional issues. They can choose to join in with the activities happening that day, or use the opportunity of knowing their loved one is in a safe, happy environment to have some respite from their caring role. There’s no fee for carers to accompany their cared-for person, only the person with a diagnosis of dementia needs to be a member.
